Artist statement
I began my career in the mid 70's with installation art, sculpture, automatic theater, performance, design and printmaking. In the past 15 years I began to focus on painting as it allowed the most immediate fulfilling media to express formalism, narrative, figuration and abstraction. I typically work from photographs and drawing to develop a method to approach painting. Subject matter is usually landscape or the figure but the painting allows for its own logic and direction. Intuition rather than concept or rule-based process has become my methodology with regard to approach. My go to teacher is Matisse because of his strong modern design and looseness of paint handling. I would characterize myself as a modernist-expressionist with a knowledge and reverence for painting methods and history.
