Artist statement
I build portraits as excavations. My practice, which I call ChronoDermism, treats the painted surface as both skin and archive. Joining chronos, or time, and derma, or skin, the term names my interest in how identity accumulates pressure, memory, damage, repair, beauty, and contradiction. My relationship to the human image began in tattooing, where skin became a site of permanence, transformation, and personal history. Mural work expanded that understanding to architectural surfaces marked by weather, labor, and erasure. On canvas, I bring these histories together through acrylic, impasto, torn paper, gold leaf, compressed foil, pigment stains, stenciled forms, and graffiti-derived gestures. I build, obscure, fracture, scrape, and rebuild each surface until the portrait feels excavated rather than illustrated. The eyes remain the point of greatest clarity: evidence of a person who cannot be fully erased. Gold leaf functions not simply as ornament, but as artifact—a remnant of value, illumination, or attempted repair. Fractures and exposed layers become records of survival rather than signs of ruin alone. Across Face Value, Veiled, Portal, and the developing GlyphPulse and Floating Lucidity works, the portrait shifts from likeness into a psychological and material environment. I am now expanding ChronoDermism from intimate fragments to monumental canvases, modular fields, and installation-based spaces. The central question remains: What survives when the surface is altered?...
