Lives and works in New York City, NY, USA
Artist statement
I make site-specific performances and video artworks that play with scale and duration in order to investigate deep time, embodiment, and our human relationship with the environment. My work is an intimate encounter with our ephemerality, exploring the fine line between complete abandon and utter control, action and stillness. Time is my primary material and subject: I examine the temporality of the places we live, challenge routinized schedules, connect the ancient past with the hyper-present and the distant future, and test endurance in order to spark, expand, and catalyze individual and collective sensory experiences. I create interactive situations to stimulate dialogue between strangers and open new possibilities for thinking between the everyday and the existential. Connecting with people around the city, nation, and world to recognize our common future requires deep listening and connection. Working together with integrity and respect, our bodies in water (and on land) become living proof of our shared commonality. My visual arts process is informed by two decades of work in the theater as a maker, director, and translator. I work across disciplines and formal boundaries, often juxtaposing seemingly disparate materials to let the narrative emerge and invite surprise. Three ongoing bodies of work: 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea (2013-present) is a global series where I stand in a tidal bay for a full tidal cycle and invite the public to stand with me...
