Artist statement
My practice uses hyperrealism as a critical strategy: a way of testing the authority we grant to images. I am interested in how technical precision, familiarity, and visual seduction can make an image appear truthful even when its meaning is unstable. Through large-scale oil paintings, I examine identity, representation, and the mechanisms through which images persuade us. Faces are often erased, obscured, displaced, or transformed, interrupting the expectation that a portrait should reveal a coherent subject. This tension between extreme visual clarity and uncertainty about who—or what—is being represented is central to my work. The slow, controlled process of painting is integral to this investigation. Hyperrealism allows me to construct images with a strong sense of credibility and then undermine that credibility from within. I am interested in the moment when recognition turns into doubt: when the image remains convincing, but the identity it seems to contain begins to dissolve. My work occupies this unstable space between appearance and meaning, presence and absence, reality and fabrication. Rather than offering fixed narratives, I use realism to examine how images produce authority, construct identity, and shape what we are willing to believe.
