Artist statement

As an interdisciplinary artist, I merge traditional art techniques with scientific materials and biological mediums. Through my work, I make the unseen microorganisms around us visible, giving us a physical insight into the micro-world. My work involves exploring invisible organisms and creating interactive biological landscapes that can be observed visually. I extract microorganisms from various sources and then cultivate them in a controlled environment to visually witness and study their interactions. Germinating microorganisms in the controlled environment creates an abstract picture when they transform into active paint substances. In this artificial environment, I employ metaphors to describe the human experience by examining the behavior of microorganisms. During my previous career as a scientist, I researched microscopic pathogens found in forests. My studies aimed to understand how microorganisms exist, interact, and affect our environment. Now, I incorporate my fascination with microorganisms into my artistic practice. I use microorganisms in my work for two main reasons. Firstly, to remind us that there are other living beings besides humans, including those too small for the naked eye to see. These microorganisms, also known as the unseen majority, are present in our environment and play a crucial role in our ecosystem.
