Artist statement
Serlian Barreto is a Cuban visual artist who graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana and later became a painting professor at that academy. This new series of works comprises a variety of paintings related to Western culture, focusing especially on the civilizations of the Aegean Sea and their Greco-Roman heritage. These works are mainly based on the great literary creations of authors and historians such as Suetonius, Homer, Herodotus, Sophocles, and Virgil, covering topics such as mythology, poetry, tragedy, historiography, geography, as well as sociopolitical and religious issues. The series pays tribute to these cultures and personalities and seeks to promote reflection on universal issues such as identity, migration, resistance, and power, reinterpreting their myths in the contemporary era, generating significant effects on society and the individual, offering a reflection on current issues, and establishing a dialogue between the past and the present. The series seeks not only to pay tribute to ancient civilizations, but also to offer new perspectives and question contemporary narratives.
