Artist statement
I make sculptures and drawings that are grounded in the traditions and rituals of textile-making, with a focus on weaving as both a practice and a language. I was taught Hmong textile skills at an early age by my mother, and I worked as a seamstress at sixteen and later as a weaver for ten years. In my artwork, I draw from what I learned from my elders and from traditions forged through displacement and survival, while seeking to foreground my labor and unravel secrets and silences held within materials and patterns. I approach weaving as a process defined by layering, repetition, ritual and care, and one that does not rely on the use of any technical equipment. Rather than using a loom, I imagine my own body as weaving-able, and through sensing, I create woven forms and patterns that resist notation.
