Artist statement
My work explores how complexity can be held within restraint. I build layered porcelain structures using Nerikomi, often beginning with the form of a fully bloomed flower. As the pattern develops, I reduce contrast and conceal parts of what has been constructed. I then cut and reassemble the clay until the original image becomes difficult to recognize. The pattern remains, but it no longer presents itself immediately. This process forms the basis of my series Silence. For me, silence is not an absence. It is a deliberate state of restraint within complexity. The complexity remains physically embedded within the material, even when much of it is visually suppressed. In the darker works, the form appears first as a single restrained presence. From a distance, the surface may seem almost monochromatic. As the viewer approaches, subtle tonal shifts emerge and fragments of the layered structure become visible. I work at this threshold of visibility—the point at which something concealed begins to reveal itself. Silence is not emptiness, but a state in which complexity, after being restrained and transformed, can finally come to rest.
