Artist statement
I am a queer, multimedia artist whose work is primarily based in painting. My practice currently concerns itself with the notion of utopias. I am working with the idea of creating abstract, utopic non-spaces within my paintings, based on segments of photographs that I have taken on my phone camera. Photographs taken on smart phones are created using algorithms and data, which the phone uses to fill in the gaps and improve image quality. I am exploring the notion that these images are built up from several sites, creating multiple worlds in a singular image. Sites which are a representation of our own world, but which cannot exist within reality. The subject of the photographs used for my paintings and are often found in nature, the home, and architecture. The works deals with how architectural forms interact with nature and how this can be abstracted and diffused through technology. My paintings are made using an airbrush, and draw influence from op art, Bauhaus and science fiction artwork, and my practice involves abstracting reality through a combination of repetitive processes and automatic drawing.
