Artist statement
Sullivan Clare Williams is a storyteller and a creator who spends their time in the pursuit of capturing elusive feelings and mysteries through visual and written art. They are a mixed media artist with a primary focus in acrylic portraiture as well as figurative and abstract sculpture. In their acrylic portraits, the models they use are often someone they love or admire with whom they conduct a series of interviews. Within these interviews, they try to capture a sense of the model's character as well as their look. Much of Williams' work is thematically inspired by their relationship to the feeling of loneliness and their evolving understanding of community. Throughout these portraits, Williams leaves a smattering of small paint marks and swatches on the canvas accompanying the figure in an attempt to unveil the layering and decision process that leads to the finished composition. They incorporate this through their use of color and abstraction of the backgrounds to accompany the figures in an attempt to discover how their relationship to the unknown cultivates a sense of comfort through art.
