Artist statement

As I continue to practice my craft, my work has visually settled in-between beauty, darkness and humor. Though my eyes, our world is in a perpetual state of “Carnival”, and so my work takes on that visual to aid in communication on social, political and environmental themes. The sensibilities of ‘carnival’ feel very approachable, its humorous side allowing viewers to examine and probe my works without intimidation. After reviewing my work you can see I am no fan of vagueness, and would much rather hit the viewer over the head with direct visual associations. I bring the viewer ‘in’ using everyday, knowable materials that create visually stunning and mentally stimulating intentional art. So while individual items incorporated into the larger piece let the viewer begin the task of engagement, they also act as a gateway to deeper, larger issues being discussed within the entire work of art. I am a firm believer in what Elizabeth Gilbert calls “the arrogance of belonging”, and it is within this statement that I deliver my thoughts and passions on what I see as the important topics of our day. I celebrate us, and our absurdity. We are beautiful, horrid, tragic, and profoundly funny.
