Artist statement

I create objects which include a painted surface, thus I am a painter. When I paint on canvas, I take great care in the building of frames, stretching and priming the canvas. Sometimes I apply the paint onto glass and when it is dry, peel it off and present just the hanging paint surface in a space. It is important to me that the objects are all square and the dimensions are orientated to the size of the physical space which I occupy; I am 180cm tall and so my works are 180cm x 180cm (1/1), 135cm x 135cm (3/4), 90cm x 90cm (1/2) or 45cm x 45cm (1/4) I am intrigued by the idea of space; real or physical, virtual and illusionistic, symbolic and metaphorical. In many of my works I selectively cover important areas of colour with tape and apply a thick layer of new colour. Removing the tape or scraping through with tools, reveals the underlying surface. Repeating this process builds structure to the work and creates multiple depths. I sometimes apply clear resin to each dried layer in order to build more real space between layers. This offers the effect that paint is trapped in time and space like a mosquito trapped in amber. My works may reflect a coloured hue from the back or sides onto the wall on which they hang. I try to disguise the source of this hue, either by hanging the work a short distance from the wall, or by cutting the edges of the canvas stretcher at 45 degrees so they can only be observed at an acute angle. I make use of the blackest paint currently available
