Artist statement

My interest lies in re-conceptualising painting as a vehicle for navigating speculative ideas structured around the subject of Painting itself. For example, filtering Painting through the lens of hysteria and hysteria through the lens of Painting, which sees repressed and expanded notions of painting siting alongside appropriated imagery, contrived gestures and abstracted signifiers. This is both a discursive and a material approach where Painting not only performs within its own narrative, but also hijacks narratives outside of itself thus enabling it to become the main protagonist. Many of my paintings are initially executed on Plastic sheeting where I utilise several home-grown strategies specifically designed to remove the paint more quickly than it can be applied. Working in this way means the surface is continually disrupted through a series of hysterical interventions that apprehend the progress of the work. Its a dumb way of working that is generative through its counter-productive drive to sabotage every Painting anew. I am rigorously consistent through my engagement with process yet inconsistency informs the application of that process. This approach allows me to maintain an authentic engagement with Painting.
