Titus Eichenberger

Lives and works in Switzerland

Artist statement

Titus was born in 1965. He grew up in the countryside in Switzerland. As a teenager he was trained in traditional landscape painting, but he quickly became more interested in introspective art, rather than depicting the outer world. He started to develop his first authentic style through an eclectic mixture of romanticism and expressionism. Over the years his painting has become more and more expressive of dynamics that cannot be categorized in either the concrete or abstract. In 2003 he created his first works which depended entirely upon the motion of the stroke. He uses the moving stroke to construct an impression of space and figuration. This happens in a manner that produces fields of forms - like quantums in physics. The actual meaning of the picture is finally defined through the process of observation and association within the onlooker. Titus uses a number of different types of strokes in a strict way during his creative process, but the actual setting of the lines follows intuition rather than rule. He is deeply intrigued by the interaction between a systematic approach to form and emotional expression. Creating blurry associations, Titus challenges onlookers to involve with their own sensations and trying to understand what happens inside their psyche, rather than to identify a specific topic in the artwork. Titus' apporach to art has led to collaborations with scientists and institutions such as presently the Max-Planck-Institute for Empirical Aesthetics....
