Lives and works in Chicago, IL, USA
Artist statement
Yukyeom Kim is an interdisciplinary artist whose work delves into human psychological dynamics like shyness, flirtatiousness, and awkwardness. Educated in Sculpture at Hongik University (BFA) and in Art and Technology at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA), she combines robotics and electronics to create kinetic sculptures and interactive installations that evoke and mirror these intimate human emotions. Her piece , for example, features a robot that looks away when approached, exploring how people emotionally respond to machines that mimic human behavior. Yukyeom also records her daily emotions non-verbally through watercolor strokes, which she scans and animates, creating visual gestures that express the fluidity and constant change of feelings. Recently, she has shifted focus to public interactions, questioning the nature of relationships in shared spaces, as seen in works like and , which engage anonymous audiences in urban environments.
