Artist statement
Yuri Hwang works in expanded printmaking, drypoint scratching directly onto canvas and inking its grooves. Treating print as a technology of mass reproduction, with the screen as its inheritor, Hwang applies print’s mark-making logic to painting’s traditional support, appropriating a templated system to create unique objects. Her subjects likewise reflect this tension between the individual and structures built for many: figures emerge from uneven hatching, tonally blurring into their surroundings. The work sits on a threshold, between print and painting, between the individual and the collective. The viewer is asked to recognize their own place in this structure, complicit in looking: a voyeur who arrives expected, their place already prepared.
