Lives and works in London, UK
Artist statement
Zara Matthews recent work 'Shelved' is a series of paintings made of objects found in abandoned rooms and vacant apartments. The objects emanate an aura within the space where only they remain, and whilst acting as reminders of past inhabitants, they also leave indications for the future. The viewer is reminded of the meaning of these objects, in past, present and future, and can reflect on their own interactions with them. This level of engagement creates a feeling of presence and absence simultaneously and whilst the transient nature of life is ever-present in the works, they call our value systems of constant regeneration into question. She has recently been awarded the Figurative Art Now top prize of a Solo Show for this series.
