Fern Apfel
b. Kinderhook, NY. Lives and works in Kinderhook, NY.
"Fern T. Apfel is known for her paintings with hand written text. Nudging the boundaries between language, painting, and abstraction, these compositions present life as an inescapable circle of time and memory. Though her works are still-lifes, Apfel explores our naturally occurring two-dimensional plane through the social interfaces it inhabits, mining beauty from playing cards, real letters, old stamps, pages of diaries, pieces from well-thumbed books, and memorabilia gathered over years from around the world. Often mistaken for collage, her tromp l’oile compositions push our comprehension of the tangible. The dots on a set of dominos become constellations of stars and an open notebook hints at new possibilities."

Becky Brown
b. New York, NY. Lives and works in Buffalo, NY.. 2012 MFA, Hunter College, New York, NY.
"Becky Brown's paintings react to our relationships with technology through word play and explorations in language. Brown celebrates what is lost in an over-digitized experience; the material presence and the handmade mark. Gathering texts from online sources such as news, advertising, and social media, Brown concocts often-humorous compositions that play into our shared experience of overexhaustion as we navigate endless accounts, passwords, files, apps, and options. Her works, which are often colorful and playful, seem to reflect the corporate palette and design she's riffing off."

Helen Shu
b. 1996, Shanghai, China. Lives and works in New York, NY.
"Helen Shu’s paintings don't seem to stick to one style; rather they share a similar way of playing between graphics and abstraction. Though there is an obvious mark of the hand and intuitive reactive painting style, some shapes entering the composition feel like they were sourced, but the reference is left indistinguishable. Forms look like they are templates, or silhouettes of borrowed origin, but they’ve been scrubbed of meaning. It’s as if a sticker was applied but then washed out and all that's left is the shape without the content. The resulting paintings feel like characters, each with their own personalities."
